Celebrating a Year of Warmth and Success at the Chestnut Centre
As we mark the first anniversary of the Chestnut Centre being designated as a ‘Centre for Warmth,’ we are thrilled to share the remarkable achievements and positive impact we’ve made in our community over the past year. This work has been generously supported through Northern Gas Network’s VCMA funding.
Year in Review: Comprehensive Achievements
Quarter 1 Highlights
During the first quarter, we recruited three Community Connectors who underwent extensive training, including Energy Ambassador, Carbon Monoxide Awareness, Gambling Awareness, and Benefit Ambassador training. They focused on signing up as many people as possible to the Priority Services Register while completing their wider training.
We produced various marketing tools, including leaflets, banners, and information sheets, to explain the Centre for Warmth to our staff and the community. These materials were used at community events, on social media, and sent to partner organisations.
Our Community Connectors engaged with people at various venues and events, such as the Chestnut Centre, Community House, Milnsbridge Village Hall, Tolson Museum, and more, raising awareness about PSR, energy saving tips, and CO awareness.
Quarter 2 Highlights
In the second quarter, we introduced the Chestnut Centre as a ‘Centre for Warmth’ to all LS2Y staff during an all-staff meeting. This meeting led to the creation and implementation of many actions supporting the project.
Our Community Connectors attended large events like a Family Fun Day and a Community Fun Day, signing up local people to the PSR and raising CO awareness. They also visited Huddersfield Mission and The Grange GP surgery, engaging with vulnerable individuals and patients to provide support and sign-ups.
We forged relationships with community nurseries, the Women’s Circle, and other organisations, offering support and resources to parents and individuals in need.
Quarter 3 Highlights
In the third quarter, we attended NGN’s ‘Supporting Communities Together’ event, hosted a successful Fun Day at the Chestnut Centre, and continued to provide training for our staff.
The Fun Day event had numerous positive outcomes, including health checks, vaccinations, library sign-ups, Baby Boutique referrals, and PSR sign-ups. The event was filmed by Kirklees Local TV, showcasing our efforts to the wider community.
Quarter 4 Highlights
In the fourth quarter, we started hosting weekly coffee mornings, visited multiple community groups, and arranged a peer visit with other Centres for Warmth.
We received positive feedback from people supported with air fryers, highlighting the benefits of these items in saving energy and money.
Our Community Connectors continued to attend training sessions, enhancing their knowledge and skills to better support the community.
Conclusion
As we reflect on the past year, we are incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made and the positive impact we’ve had on our community. The Chestnut Centre’s designation as a ‘Centre for Warmth’ has allowed us to provide essential support, resources, and advice to those in need. We look forward to continuing our efforts and building on our successes in the coming year.
